a golden start
into 2022

We’re very pleased to start into this year with such a triumphant kick-off! RE:Space has developed further, and the acclaimed jury of the „German Design Council“ has recognized and awarded this development.

RE:SPACE stands for sustainably developed and manufactured technical textiles.
We implement a complete recycling loop starting with the raw material and extending through its use in the final product, and further on to its recycling. The approach expands the loop, thanks to the fundamental possibility of using recycled material as a raw material. The dynamic concept is constantly undergoing further development, and it builds on our influence contributing to preventing the further growth of existing mountains of waste material.
This award is yet another important signpost for our ideas and actions for both the short-term and long-term future.

The award show scheduled for Feb. 11th, 2022 at the „Ambiente“ trade fair in Frankfurt am Main has unfortunately been cancelled due to Corona. The exhibition for the Gold Award winners was presented at Frankfurt’s „Museum Angewandte Kunst“.

The premier award of the German Design Council

The German Design Awards are the premium award of the German Design Council. With its worldwide spectrum and international appeal, it is one of the most prestigious awards in the design landscape across all industries. Since 2012, the German Design Awards have been identifying significant design trends, presenting them to a broad public and honouring them. Every year, extraordinary submissions in product design, communication design and architecture are honoured.
In the year of its tenth anniversary, the award, in the spirit of the pioneering design theorists Horst Rittel and Melvin Webber, has the motto »How designers think«. Special attention is paid to the many ways in which designers find answers to increasingly complex issues, from new digital technologies to climate-neutral production. The German Design Awards highlight these groundbreaking solutions and honours the people behind them.

Nominiation

The German Design Awards set the highest standards in terms of selecting their winners: in a unique nomination process, companies whose products and communication design services demonstrably exhibit design excellence are invited to enter. Moreover, companies have the opportunity to submit projects directly and on their own initiative; these will then be reviewed by the German Design Council to verify whether they meet the required participation criteria.

Categories for a broad spectrum of design

In order to appropriately reflect the diversity of our design culture, the German Design Awards are split into the categories of »Excellent Product Design«, »Excellent Communications Design« and »Excellent Architecture«. These encompass all areas of daily life. In each of the award categories, the distinctions »Gold«, »Winner« and »Special Mention« are presented.

Gold

The »Gold« distinction of the German Design Awards is the highest distinction, awarded for excellent, comprehensive and innovative design work. As leading trailblazers, »Gold« title holders provide crucial stimulation for entire industries. The jury names one or more »Gold« recipients in each category, depending on the quality of the submissions.

Winner

The »Winner« distinction of the German Design Awards pays tribute to outstanding and commendably realised design work in the context of a specific category. In each category, an appropriate number of design submissions is awarded the distinction of »Winner«. These are selected by a separate expert jury in each category of the German Design Awards.

Special Mention

The »Winner« distinction of the German Design Awards pays tribute to outstanding and commendably realised design work in the context of a specific category. In each category, an appropriate number of design submissions is awarded the distinction of »Winner«. These are selected by a separate expert jury in each category of the German Design Awards.

The Initiator

The German Design Council has operated as one of the world’s leading centres of expertise in communication and knowledge transfer within design, branding and innovation since 1953. It is part of the worldwide design community and has always contributed to the establishment of global exchange and networking thanks to its international offering, promotion of new talent and memberships. With events, conventions, awards, jury sessions and expert committees, the Council connects its members and numerous other international design and branding experts, fosters discourse and provides important stimulation for the global economy. More than 350 businesses currently count among its members.

The German Design Awards set the highest standards in terms of selecting their winners: in the nomination process, expert committees of the German Design Council only invite those products and communication design services for participation in the awards who demonstrably stand out from the competition on account of their design excellence.

All distinctions are awarded during a two-day jury meeting

Since their debut in 2012, the German Design Awards have grown considerably – from approx. 1,500 submissions in their first year to some 4,500 submissions in each of the past few years. As such, the huge international impact of the German Design Awards is underscored by the number of participants from other countries. Most recently, the share of international submissions stood at 50%. In total, participants from 60 countries have taken part in the awards. In the three award disciplines, »Excellent Product Design«, »Excellent Communications Design« and »Excellent Architecture«, a total of 76 products/projects have been awarded »Gold« in 2021.
